What Etyr collects

Etyr is built to be local-first. It has no accounts, no sign-in, and no profile. It does not collect browsing history, page content, bookmarks, or any personal information.

Network requests

Etyr makes network requests to public dictionary APIs (such as the Free Dictionary API) and optionally AI fallback services (Google Gemini, Hugging Face) to fetch definitions when you look up a word. No other data is transmitted. Definitions are cached locally so repeat lookups happen offline.

Local storage

Everything else lives in your browser’s local storage on your device:

• Words you save to your vocabulary
• Your lookup history
• Your settings (theme, pronunciation, site exclusions)
• The dictionary cache described above

What is intentionally not collected

• No analytics, trackers, or cookies
• No advertising identifiers
• No reading history or page content
• No keyboard or form input beyond the words you explicitly look up

Changes

If this policy changes, the version on this page will be updated with a new “last updated” date.
